When Buying Gold

How do you find the perfect balance between political correctness and honest opinion? Tact is as precious as gold, especially when the subject in question IS gold. A good friend of mine has recently asked me to assist her in selecting the perfect golden bands for her upcoming wedding. Little did I know she wanted my taste, and not my modest knowledge of the subject. Should she go with French designer or should she pick a better-known Italian jewelry-maker? What color gold is preferable? Gold rings with diamonds, or the traditional plain gold rings? In retrospect, I probably should have moaned about killer deadlines at work, mysterious but persistent sickness, awful details of which I would have been too lazy and uninspired to make up. Something. Anything, really. Should have, could have, would have... The honest response was a) boring b) cynical, and c) overall disappointing.

Heart over mind? No sir. Substance over style, and metal over design.

When buying jewelry, importance of the design of the piece should be secondary to its materials. Quality of the stone, its size, cut and clarity must be considered prior the purchase. If it is gold, carats are of utmost importance. Two rings identical in all but carats greatly vary in their value.

Jewelry makers in different countries generally prefer to use different purity of gold. In United States, for example the most popular gold purity is 14 carat. European gold jewelers commonly use 18 and 14 carat. Gold jewelry imported from China and Hong Kong is most likely to be the most valuable, due to the popularity of chum kam - almost 24 carat gold jewelry. India, South East Asia and the Middle East collectively come a close second with its typical stamp of 22 carat. Arguably European jewelry houses, especially well-known ones create beautiful, stunning pieces, unmatched anywhere in the word, but in terms of investment higher carat gold is much more valuable, not to mention potentially easier to sell.

Buying gold, even for the most joyous occasion should be treated with the same respect prenuptial agreements and money are. The fact that central banks world wide have been major holders of gold for more than 100 years is not accidental, nor is the bank's decision to retain large stocks in future. Perhaps it is time to look at gold jewelry not only from the perspective of a pretty baubles, or traditional signs of love and affection, but to also consider purchases of gold, if done smartly, as an investment, regardless of how dull and unromantic that might sound.
